British Science Week 2024

We have thoroughly enjoyed celebrating British Science Week across the school from Nursery to Year 6. The theme this year was 'Time'; all of our children have had the opportunity to experience an activity during the week.

Our Reception children widened their knowledge about plants and how they grow whilst visiting the Roots and Shoots at The Alnwick Garden. We have also had Craig from The Alnwick Garden visit us in school. Craig is the resident 'Bee Keeper' and he came to talk to us about the different types of honey bee, their job roles in the hive and their life cycle.

Our Year 5 and 6 children were visited by Dasha, who is a geneticist and she talked about projects that she had been involved with. The children enjoyed discovering many job opportunities linked to genetics for the future! The children used their scientific skills to observe and record in 'Apple Science'.

Our KS1 children were visited by Lucie, who is an Engineer. The children created their own circuits powered by either a lemon, grapefruit or potato. They all made predictions about which fruit or vegetable would generate the most power. The children also discussed and programmed the steps 'indi', a robot car would need to take to move from one spot to another. Our UKS2 children worked with Lucie, and Claire from Newcastle University Outreach Team on coding a Micro:bit which is a tiny computer that can be programmed to complete a range of actions.
